1) Opportunity: Tourism increases in Florida every year. With this influx, an increasing amount of people will need a place to stay. This is an opportunity to find a plot of land in Orlando and build a hotel.
b) Tourists generally come to Florida to spend money, and tourism is a massive contribution of revenue in Florida.
c) Prototypical customer would be anyone coming to Orlando, Florida needing a place to stay.
d) Opportunity may be relatively difficult to exploit, due to having to the lengthy, pricy process of finding land and building a hotel.
I saw this as an opportunity to build a hotel simply because I enjoy staying at hotels a lot. I like how the rooms often smell of fresh sheets and have experienced difficulties trying to find hotel rooms during times of peak annual tourism.
2) Economic trend: Florida natural disasters cost $68.6 billion between 1986 and 2015, and that number is rising. This leads to endless opportunities to try and preserve the city. One idea would be a plan to build safe and effective drainage systems in Miami.
b) Miami is a beautiful place full of millions of people and lots of culture. People aren't ready to give it up to the inevitable flooding just yet.
c) Prototypical customers could be private land owners with waterfront properties, or the Miami government in the form of a grant to install systems city-wide.
d) This opportunity would be very difficult to exploit, and would require qualified scientists and engineers, as well as construction workers. Given the proper tools, it could generate a lot of revenue.
I saw this opportunity because I grew up in south Florida, and remember that area fondly. I would hope it is possible to keep it steady and alive as long as possible.
3) Florida regulation: Shore anglers fishing for sharks are no longer allowed to use parts of dead fish to attract sharks. I am sure there are fishermen who are upset by this regulation, wanting to use fish. This is an opportunity to start a company making faux fish bait, or bait containing artificial flavorings that attract sharks.
b) There are some things that can attract sharks from miles away, and fish bait is one of them. A way to recreate this would be valuable to fishers.
c) Prototypical customers would be shark fishers who want a bait method comparable to fish.
d) I would see this as an opportunity because I have seen people try to fish for sharks in piers, and they very commonly use live fish.
4) Florida regulation: Paramedics are now allowed to carry firearms in certain "high risk" settings. They must be trained in order to properly use them. The opportunity then, is to find a profitable way to train them to properly use guns.
b) It is extremely important that people who wield guns know how to use them. Even police, who are supposed to have extensive training, mishandle their guns all the time. It is in everyone's best interest that these people are trained.
c) Prototypical customer would probably be the state and/or municipal government.
d) I see this as an opportunity because every day new stories come out as police officers mishandle guns. Many people believe that more guns do not make us safer, and if there are going to be more guns in the emergency task force, then they must be used properly.

Hi Heather,
ReplyDeleteThe tourism industry is full of opportunities and improvement. Orlando is already packed with hotels but still can’t fill all the demand. Since the Orlando area has a lot of theme parks like Disney and Universal but since there is limited space in the areas around there, a hotel close to the parks would undoubtedly serve customer needs and make a lot of profit.
Hello Heather,
ReplyDeleteI found the articles you choose to be unique and interesting. I was extremely intrigued by one of your regulatory articles, the one about paramedics now being able to carry firearms in "high risk" areas. I remember hearing about this, but I never heard if it passed the Florida House and Senate. I believe this causes a very interesting debate as many times paramedics respond to high risk situations and have no way to protect themselves, but we have to make sure they complete all the proper training.
