My Entrepreneurship Story
When I was nine, I first started experimenting with making music via windows movie maker. I used a webcam to record an instrumental track of "never say never" by Justin Bieber and Jaden Smith, unaware that there was a way to just download it as an mp3. I then used that same webcam to record myself singing lead and harmony. As a music producer, I have grown so much since that day, and by high school my skills were borderline monetizable. I started charging rates between $20-$40 to compose tracks, have people record covers, and work on originals. This proved to be wildly unsustainable, given the amount of time college level courses eat up in any given day as well as the amount of time music production consumes. I had to pause that to focus on my part time job and school.
I am taking Principles of Entrepreneurship so that one day, I can find a way to sustainably implement my dream of producing music into real life. Or maybe, I'm looking for someone to tell me that it will straight-up never happen. Both work. I also just enjoy listening to and understanding the concepts behind what makes a business successful, and what doesn't. I believe it is important for workers in any role or position, not just entrepreneurs and managers.

Hi Heather, when I saw this I thought you might enjoy a post from one of our classmates. Ulysses and yourself seem to have some overlap in your thought processes. Check it out.

I agree that the concepts covered in ENT3003 are quite applicable to any type of business that I imagine myself in, even if the take-away is that good ideas that fire me up make crappy business prospects. I imagine that you find yourself up late into the night to find time for your music. Keep it up, you can sleep when you're old!
Hey Heather,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post because it seems that you are following what you love to do and making money off what you are good at. That is neat that you started becoming a music producer and trying to stimulate money and grow your knowledge on the music industry from that job. I wish you the best of luck with the music industry and becoming a producer. I know it is tough to become so popular in society for that but do not give up and believe you can get there. Enjoyed reading your post, definitely a unique experience.
Hi Heather,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your story and find your story very intriguing. When I was younger I also enjoyed messing around with tracks and mashing tracks together. I always enjoyed it but never truly understood it enough. I think you are definitely on the right track, and hope you are able to do and accomplish everything you want. Overall I think your story is very unique and intriguing.
Heather, I think what you're doing is awesome. Don't let anyone tell you it won't happen, and if they do, use that as motivation to make it happen. So many successful, famous people were told they would not succeed at something. What if they had just listened and given up? Keep pursuing music and use this class to learn how to profit off of it successfully and efficiently. Best of luck and I hope to hear your music someday!
